Callaway Geo-Sciences Building, the University of West Georgia

Designed to provide additional teaching, research and office space for both the Geosciences and Water Resources Department, this facility is located at a crucial point in the Campus Master Plan. Sited between the historic Front Campus and Back Campus drives, the atrium lobby and internal building circulation systems must incorporate a major east-west student pathway in the quadrangle formed by the historic structures of Front Campus Drive and those constructed much later on Back Campus Drive. Due to this unique position, the building shapes, masses and facades are required to relate the varied architectural styles of the original Callaway Building and its neighboring structures. The project provides a 70-seat lecture hall, multiple classrooms, GIS and research computer centers, laboratories for geologic, sedimentary and water quality studies as well as a host of office and faculty support spaces.
